So much to do and prepare for the Big Day! Among the vendors you must book, your photographer is at the top of your list, but How do you choose a wedding photographer? Fret not! I am here to help give you specific steps to follow that will make choosing your photographer a breeze.
Choosing the perfect photographer for your wedding day is a crucial decision that can significantly impact how you remember and cherish your special moments. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to choose your perfect photographer:
Begin your search for a wedding photographer as early as possible. Take the time to review the portfolios of potential photographers. Look for consistency in style, quality, and the ability to capture emotions. Pay attention to how they handle various lighting conditions. Popular photographers may get booked quickly, especially during peak wedding seasons. Peak season for us is late Summer and the entirety of the Fall seasons. You want to make sure the person you click with will have your date available.
Determine the style of photography you prefer. Whether it’s traditional, candid, documentary, or a mix, understanding your style will help you narrow down your options. Also decide the types of edits you like of your photographs. Do you like light and airy edits, dark and moody, true to color, high contrast, film, etc. If you don’t know, a simple google search will help you determine this. My a mix of light and airy with true to color elements. I like my images to look like your actual wedding day did. I do not believe in over editing.
Bonus: If you like the look of film and specifically want a film photographer, you want to search Film Photographers in your location so that you can hire someone specializing in films.
Establish a realistic budget for your wedding photography. This will help you focus on photographers within your price range and avoid unnecessary stress later on. Many photographers will state their starting rates on their websites; while some will invite you to a call before they share their prices with you.
Please do not be intimidated by this at all. Get on a call with them and find out what they are like. They might end up being your favorite and you might not care paying a little more, or (EVEN BETTER), they might be under your allotted budget! Don’t be afraid to get on that call with them (photographer or any other vendor for that matter)! My prices are listed on my website started at $3700 for an 8-hour wedding within 2 hours of Fredericksburg, VA; however, I invite all of my clients to get a call with me so we can learn about each other before moving forward.
Fourthly, I guess this is part of Step 1 where you start looking early for your photographers. Get recommendations from friends, family, or wedding planners. Look at online reviews, portfolios, and social media to identify potential photographers with a good reputation. remember not to allow overwhelm to take hold, and simply enjoy the process of “shopping”. It’s your big day, you want to make sure and enjoy the process!
Schedule meetings or virtual consultations with your shortlisted photographers. Invite your wedding planner and your fiance to this step so that you can ask questions together and make sure this individual is the best one that can serve you well. This allows you to discuss your vision, ask questions, and gauge whether you have good chemistry with them.
Inquire about the photographer’s experience, especially with weddings. A seasoned wedding photographer will be better equipped to handle various situations and deliver consistent results. This is important in your quest to choosing a wedding photographer. Additionally, ask about galleries you can see that match the vibe of your venue. If you are getting married in the heart of Washington D.C. as opposed to a beautiful venue at the foothills of the Shenandoah mountains Virginia, ask to see galleries similar to your venue so that you can get an idea of shooting and editing styles, etc.
Understand the photographer’s packages and what is included. Ask about additional services, such as engagement sessions, second shooters, and photo albums. Most photographers like myself will have an engagement session as part of our wedding experience in our packages. They are sessions that cannot be taken out of the package to reduce package price. It’s very important that we meet and photograph you before the wedding so that you can get to know us as photographers and we can get to know you as clients. As a result, want to make sure you are prepped for how to pose on your wedding day, and we know your preferences as well so that time isn’t lost on your wedding day learning each other’s styles and preferences.
Discuss the rights and usage of the photos. Make sure you understand how you can use and share the images, and if there are any restrictions. Always sign a contract that outlines all terms and conditions. This includes the services provided, payment details, cancellation policies, and other important aspects to protect both parties. Be sure to discuss change of dates, cancellations, deposits (funds that may or may not be refundable), etc. This is important as you go about choosing a wedding photographer.
Ask about your photographer’s approach to editing and post-processing. Ensure that their style aligns with your preferences, whether it’s natural, vintage, or more heavily edited. I mentioned this above, but here I want to make and share that you should ask about turn-around time. This should be included in your contract. Ask about gallery limitations or if the photographer provides images on a flash drive. Be sure to understand how long your images will be available in your online gallery. In the contract it will most likely state how long you’ll have access before the photographer must retire the gallery. Your responsibilities to store your images in your own storage system should be discussed so that there aren’t any ambiguities.
The last tip I have for you is to just trust your gut. If you feel comfortable and connected with a photographer, it is likely you have found someone who is a perfect match for you. Once you’ve made your decision, finalize the details and stay in communication leading up to your wedding day. Provide any additional information or changes as needed.
Please don’t rush the process of choosing a wedding photographer. I want you to remember that your photographer plays an important role in capturing everything on your wedding day. It’s important to take your time to find someone who understands your vision and makes you feel at ease. I wish you luck and love as you go forward in your search.
