This weekend I had the opportunity to lend a helping hand to some loved ones who were moving. In the process, we gathered a big pile of things that no one had seen in a long time and no one was going to need ever again. We called it the “Good Will” pile. Another, an even larger pile, ended up being items that just needed to be discarded. We called that the trash pile. It made me think about how much STUFF we buy and end up hoarding things we don’t need. Some things we have a sentimental attachment to, and others, we forget we even have them. For this Monday Musings, I would like to give you some tips to declutter your life.

Before long, I found myself stressing about all the THINGS that I needed to part with, and that’s when I found myself on Google searching for organizational techniques, material and tips and tricks. So today, I want to share that with you a few tips so that you can apply them to your life and begin reducing your clutter and your stress.

De-Clutter your life!

1. Every week, take a trash bag, walk around the house and put things in that bag that you haven’t used in a while. That trinket on the bookshelf that has gathered a ton of dust, yes, we ALL have a few of those, get rid of it. Put it in that bag. If you think Good Will will take it, then give it to them. If you think it’s trash, then put the bag full of stuff in your garbage.
2. That favorite TV show of yours has commercials. Don’t skip through them. Instead, go to your closet during each commercial break and get rid of clothes that have been pushed to the very back of the closet. You have about 3-5 minutes to do this during each break. You will be AMAZED at how many items you will find that you haven’t worn in years. Be a blessing to someone who may actually need those items. Get rid of them.
3. Go to your kitchen and get rid of plates and cups and bowl and glasses that are no longer in use. You aren’t using them. So why are they living in your cabinets rent free? Say “Adios” to those items. I don’t think even Good Will will take them. Just put them in the trash.
4. When you are out on a Saturday running errands, DO NOT GO TO YARD SALES! (You’re welcome. I just saved you from bringing other people’s clutter in to your own house.)
5. Go to your medicine cabinet. Discard old bottles of medication. Be sure to keep this particular pile of garbage from young children and pets.

Can you feel yourself distressing a bit? I thought so. 🙂
