My 2017 Business Goals

Nilo Burke Photography Brides and Grooms

Happy New Year, friends!

And just like that, 2017 is here to stay. What a blessing to celebrate another year of life with our family and friends as well as hope to meet and bless new friends along the way. New memories to be made. New goals to be set! If you are reading this blog post and wondering who I am, allow me to briefly introduce myself. My name is Nilo Burke, and I am the owner and photographer of Nilo Burke Photography serving couples in Virginia, Washington D.C. as well as Maryland. I have been in business since 2010 and specialize in photographing weddings. As we begin a new year, I would like to pause and take a moment to share with you all the ways that I plan on making my clients’ experience with me a better one. A new year calls for new goals, so here we go:

Goal 1: Edit and print the Bridal Guide I’ve been working on for two years and share it with every new 2017 couple in order to help them plan for their engagement as well as wedding day celebration.

Goal 2: Blog three times a week.

Goal 3: Reach out and connect with my fellow photographer community in person as opposed to exclusively on social media.

Goal 4: Create a Client Corner on my website where current and prospective clients can find answers to all of their questions related to their wedding day photography.

Goal 5: Create dedicated weekends that I can spend with my family and 100% away from all electronics.

Goal 6: Read Dave Ramsey’s money management books.

Goal 7: Print family photos and hang them in every room of our home to celebrate the loved ones closest to my heart.

Goal 8: Provide photo editing services to fellow photographers and take editing off their todo list.

Goal 9: Host a Spring Styled shoot.

Goal 10: Submit my work to more online blogs.

Goal 11: Work diligently to improve service to my clients and make their wedding day the memorable one yet.

Goal 12: This is a BIG one! Submit a real wedding to at least one magazine!

Friends, what are some of YOUR goals for 2017? Share them in the comment section and include a link to your blog or social media post so that we can show you some love.

Happy 2017, folks! Cheers to a beautiful year!

Monday Musings: Baby Luke is here!!!

Baby Luke is here!!!!

My sister-in-law and her husband welcomed their son 11 days before his due date, and we are so glad that he came early so that we can LOVE on him longer!!!

He is such a precious little baby boy. So “chill”, according to his mama! He is super healthy and so is my sister-in-law. We went to visit them at the hospital the day he was born. These photos were taken less than 12 hours after his birth, and you can tell just how very handsome he is!

Congrats to my sister-in-law and her husband and the entire family! We are so excited to welcome little Luke to our “Tribe”!

Send him and his family lots of love and prayers, and enjoy these photographs!

Monday Musings: A baby is on his way!

The summer is almost over, and I have many things I have yet to do on my “Summer 2016 To Do” list, but one thing that I have thoroughly enjoyed about this summer is how much family time I have been blessed with. I got to spend time with my family and my husband’s family on several occasions, which is very rare and doesn’t happen very much throughout the year. It is a blessing. Truly.

I spend the last Saturday of August photography my sister-in-law and her husband as they are just a few weeks away from welcoming their little boy into this world. It is such an exciting time for them. For all of us in the family. We have loved showering them with love all summer long, and we have been waiting patiently for the little baby to arrive.

Just a few more weeks and we will be able to hold the little angel in our arms. For now, enjoy the love that Megan and Tim for generously give to each other in these photographs. It was such a pleasure to photograph them.

Guys, these two are going to make the most wonderful parents this world has ever known!

Monday Musings: Lexy’s 10 Month Impromptu Shoot

This little girl is growing too fast for me. Way too fast.

I am trying my very best to enjoy every minute that I hold her, kiss her beautiful cheeks and snuggle with her.

A few days ago I got a new-to-me lens and wanted to try it out on Lexy and her big sister. We just went outside and I started shooting.

Well, as you can see, Lexy’s sister is a natural, and Lexy is learning from her little by little.

These two lovelies are gracing my blog this Monday, and I am thankful to God for every second of every day that I have with my loved ones. They are the ultimate gift.

Monday Musings: It’s all about a Baby!

A baby is on his way, and we are simply overjoyed!

My sister-in-law is expecting a little bundle of joy and the entire family is simply over the moon about it. This is a child who will be loved by all who know him. He will be cherished for the gift that he is. And he will have two of the most wonderful people on earth as his mother and father. A couple of weeks ago, several of her friends and family members came together for a beautiful baby shower that my mother-in-law and sister-in-law so lovingly organized. The new baby and his parents were showered with so many wonderful gifts. We cannot wait to see him use it all! There was wonderful food, a lot of laughter, onesie decorating, mommy’s belly size guessing, and lots and lots of  Ooohs and Ahhhhs over each gift that my sister-in-law opened. This past weekend she celebrated a birthday, and once again we got together to celebrate her welcome the most wonderful year of her life. It will be filled with so much joy thanks to a Baby Boy! I hope you enjoy a few photographs from the baby’s nursery. The photographs do not do the mostly handcrafted nursery justice. The parents-to-be put their heart and soul into making it a beautiful place to welcome their first child. I cannot tell you how much everyone has loved the nursery who has set foot in it. I know that you will love them too! Enjoy!!!
My mother-in-law designed the owl vegetable tray and the porcupine cheese ball with some help from my niece. My father-in-law crafted this amazing cupcake stand from wood from my sister-in-law’s property, and of course the cupcakes were made from scratch by my talented mother-in-law! Cream cheese stuffed strawberries among many other delicious foods, YES PLEASE!!!! Ballons + rain drops = my mother-in-law is responsible for this creation! Isn’t it a great idea!!! That little birdhouse was painted so beautifully by my 15-year-old niece. For party favors, everyone got a flowering plant to take home as well as these beautiful and HAND CRAFTED (by my MIL) burlap bags with a seed packet and other treats inside! She is so very talented and creative!

Monday Musings: Romantic Spring Styled Shoot

One of my goals for 2016 was to do something that pushed me out of my comfort zone and experience the excitement that comes with seeing your vision come to life. That was the motivation behind my Romantic Spring Styled shoot. It was a scary idea. I didn’t know how it would turn out. Many times I wanted to run the other direction and cancel all plans, but a small little voice kept pushing me forward and kept me excited. That and the amazing team that God surrounded me with for this project made all the difference in the world, and I will forever be grateful for all the heart they put into this project. Ever since I’ve been able to share parts of the shoot with you after it was featured on The Black Tie Bride, I’ve been shouting it from the rooftops that the amazing team that I had is the equivalent of the A Team! It is no exaggeration that I would’ve failed miserably at this project had it not been for them. To each one of you, a heartfelt thank you!

Thank you to my models!

I want to say “THANK YOU” to my friends Amara and her husband Michael for serving as my models. They were absolutely wonderful to work with. They put their life on hold to dedicate their day to us. I seriously could not have asked for a better couple to model!

Please follow these folks on social media and inquire about their services for your event. I promise you will love them as much I do.

Monday Musings: A Lesson from Jerry Seinfeld

Nilo Burke Photography-73
Delicious cupcake by Sweet Reasons

Have you heard about the ONE productivity lesson Jerry Seinfeld learned early on in his career that has lead to his success? Recently I came across an article that referenced Seinfeld and his secret to a productive career as a comic by consistently working on his goals one day at a time and not breaking the chain of productivity. What does this mean?

According to Seinfeld, to become a better comedian, you have to write your jokes every day so that you can perfect your skill. His advice is to take a big calendar that has all the days of the year on one page as well as a marker. Once you’ve completed a task related to a goal, put a big red X on that day. Keep this going every day and keep plotting your Xs on each day. After a few weeks, you will have visual proof that you have been sticking to your goals and you are working toward it a little at a time (the BEST way to work toward any goal). Keep this up and don’t break the chain of productivity by stopping at any point. That is the secret to his success! No wonder we like him so much. The funny man works hard and works daily to do what he loves to do.

What is it that YOU love to do? As a small business owner, at times we get tired and a little lazy at our craft. I know I’ve been there. But the best way to produce great work and keep getting better at your craft is to do something about it every day. A little at a time. It takes you far. Regardless of the type of business that you run, the Seinfeld method of being productive can work for you.

I have to share with you that I have a bad habit of eating lunch out often. Too often. Not only is it not healthy, but it is also a big waste of money. I am happy to report that I have been packing my lunch from home every single day for the last week and 1 day. Yes, that one day matters because it proves to me that I am still trying. Even though it’s only been one week and 1 day, I am proud of myself and I know that I’ve saved enough money already to put towards that awesome House of Flynn bag that I’ve been eyeing for a while now. 🙂

Give it a try. Get a calendar similar to this one from Amazon, (or make it a fun project and create one yourself-perhaps with some help from the little ones in your life) and begin your journey to be productive today! I wish you the very best as you move forward with your goals-big or small.

Monday Musings: A Day Trip to the Great Falls Park

Friends, its about the middle of the year, and at about this time a lot of us are looking forward to the summer vacation because, frankly, we could use a break from the regular 9-5. Whether you work full time, part time, or a little bit of both, I know you know what I mean when I say I just needed a break this weekend. That’s when my super adventurous husband came to the rescue and took me to the Great Falls Park in Virginia. It has been raining in our area for days, but Sunday just seemed like the perfect day to get out and explore the outdoors. Of course we took little Lexy with us, and I can assure you that she thoroughly enjoyed the trip as well.

There are so many activities you can participate in at the park, but with baby, we decided to forgo the real physical activities and just relax by the rocks. Perhaps when she is a bit older, we can go for a little hike. Although I could’ve stayed there the entire day and photographed everything, but sometimes, it’s just better to put the camera and the phone away and just enjoy the beauty that surrounded us.

Here’s to hoping that these photographs will inspire you to get out and let nature de-stress you!
